Council for Exceptional Children Launches Nationally Certified Transition Specialist Credential

Arlington, VA., March 25, 2026 — The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), in partnership with its Division on Career Development and Transition (DCDT), is proud to announce the launch of the Nationally Certified Transition Specialist (NCTS) credential, an innovative certification designed to elevate the quality and impact of transition services for youth and young adults with disabilities.

The NCTS credential establishes a national benchmark for professionals supporting individuals as they transition from school to postsecondary education, employment, and independent living. Grounded in CEC and DCDT’s rigorous, research-based standards, the certification recognizes practitioners who demonstrate advanced knowledge, skills, and competencies in transition planning and service delivery.

“Transition services are critical to ensuring successful post-school outcomes for individuals with disabilities,” said Chad Rummel, Executive Director of CEC. “The Nationally Certified Transition Specialist credential affirms a professional’s expertise and commitment to delivering high-quality, evidence-based practices that make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.”

The NCTS credential addresses a growing need for qualified professionals in the transition services field. As federal policies and workforce demands continue to emphasize improved postsecondary outcomes, the certification provides a clear pathway for professionals to demonstrate their proficiency and leadership in this specialized area.

The Nationally Certified Transition Specialist credential is designed for professionals who support transition-age youth and young adults with disabilities, including:

  • Special education teachers
  • Transition specialists and coordinators
  • Vocational rehabilitation counselors
  • School counselors and administrators
  • Community-based service providers
  • Workforce development professionals

Candidates pursuing the credential demonstrate a commitment to advancing their expertise and improving outcomes for individuals navigating the transition to adulthood.

CEC will offer multiple opportunities throughout the year for eligible candidates to sit for the NCTS exam. Upcoming exam dates include:

  • April 21, 2026: Gainesville, Florida at the Visions Conference
  • October 14, 2026: New Orleans, Louisiana at the DCDT Conference
  • October 17, 2026: New Orleans, Louisiana at the DCDT Conference
  • March 10, 2026: Columbus, Ohio at the CEC Convention & Expo

While NCTS has been around for a few years, it was only eligible to those who graduated from accredited programs. However, with the launch of an exam-based credential, more individuals who have worked in the field can be recognized. In a milestone moment for the profession, nine individuals completed the NCTS exam onsite at the CEC 2026 Convention & Expo on March 14, 2026.
